The Calais Fire Association with the Sunrise Snowmobilers hosted a snowmobile parade. Although the weather was windy and snowing, everyone had a great time. Click the snowmobile to see the pictures.
Each year the State of Maine has a Fire Convention. The 2006 convention was held in the City of York. Below are some photos from the event:
Cemetery Project
The
Calais Fire Department has always considered the cemetery Top Priority and over
the years we have been involved in many projects there. It all began in
1979 when members decided to replace the old wrought iron gate and replace it
with a new granite front. We then planted shrubs down either side to form a
boundary at the front of the cemetery. In 1985
we began an ongoing project to put grave markers on
all deceased fire fighters graves going back to 1851. Along with these markers,
which incidentally hold flags, it was decided that on Memorial Day of each year,
to put fire fighters flags on each marker, further honoring our deceased
members. In 1986 a letter was drafted up and sent to city council asking for a
plot of ground in the cemetery to be used for a fire dept. memorial, as do the
legions and VFW. This lot complete with granite stone work and flag serves as a
fitting tribute to all deceased fire fighters serving Calais since 1851. Also a
bronze tablet was erected on the monument stating “In Honor” to the members
of the Calais Fire Dept. who dedicated themselves to protecting our citizens
from danger since 1851. Usually in the spring before Memorial Day, flowers are
planted around our monument to again honor our deceased members, and add a nice
touch to the overall appearance of the cemetery.
In
2000 we erected an arch over the opening to the cemetery and centered in the
middle of the arch reads Calais Cemetery. This finally finishes the project we
started back in 1979 to beautify the overall appearance at the front of the
cemetery.
As
time goes on others that take our place will find different things that needs to
be taken care of at the Calais Cemetery and so the work up there will continue.
During
the International festival celebrated in Calais Maine and St.Stephen New
Brunswick, Canada in August. Calais Fire Department was participating in a
Fireman’s muster in St. Stephen a lady approached Calais Fire department
Association President Lt. Glenn Connolly and identified herself as Patricia
Atkinson-Battista a teacher from Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne New Jersey.
She further explained that she was head of S.H.A.R.E. (Students of Hawthorne
Acting Responsibly and Effectively), a student organization that had adopted
Ladder 7/Engine 16 of the New York Fire Department. She further explained that
the organization help on many fundraisers to help Ladder 7/ Engine 16, a company
that lost 9 of its members on 9/11.
Over the next few months she has kept in touch with Calais fire through Lt. Connolly, and together with Mingos Evergreen Products it was decided that Calais Fire would make and send Maine Wreaths to members of Ladder 7/Engine 16 and the 9 families that lost a loved one from that department.
